Almost two dozen irrigation channels lead through Val Venosta/Vinschgau. These irrigation channels of several kilometres of length originate from an ancient irrigation system surrounding the fields and meadows. The aim of the irrigation channels was to provide the extremely dry Val Venosta/Vinschgau Valley with the required water. Kilometres of moats were realised with the simplest methods in order to provide the villages, harbours and farms with water from the glacier rivers. Surviving would not have been possible without this water in the Val Venosta/Vinschgau Valley, which was characterised by a rural landscape and lifestyle.



In ancient days the irrigation channels served as maintenance paths for the administrators of these waterways. Nowadays, hikers and families enjoy walking along the irrigation channels. Mostly, the irrigation channels are flat paths leading along the slopes of Val Venosta/Vinschgau, and provide a fantastic view of the fertile valley basin and the imposing mountains.
