The mild but arid climate, varied natural scenery and 250 km of well-marked trails help turn Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch and its surroundings into one of the most popular hiking areas in the Alps. The north side of the valley, along sunny Monte Sole mountain, offers hiking trails even into winter. Along the old irrigation channels there are possibilities for relaxed hikes for the entire family. Popular hiking routes run through meadows and forests, or up to huts or shelters. Adventurous excursions of several days lead into the realm of eternal ice, while the high peaks of the surrounding glaciers are truly challenging.

Due to its strategic location, Prato is an ideal starting point for excursions in Venosta Valley and the Stelvio National Park. The Ortles summit in the Ortles-Cevedale glacier mountain massif is the highest peak in the Eastern Alps. Close the borders with Lombardy, Austria and Grisons in Switzerland, Prato allo Stelvio is surrounded by popular mountain groups and natural parks such as as the Ötztal Alps, and the Sesvenna group. Visitors with a Venosta Valley Card have free access to public transport all around the region, and can easily get to all points of departure for the hiking trails.
