Stairways to heaven

Alpine Romanesque Road

Churches, castles, convents – jewels from Romanesque times. In Val Venosta/Vinschgau and the surroundings, around the city of Merano/Meran and Val di Non/Nonsberg and in Oltradige/Überetsch you can enjoy a journey back to medieval times.

The roman sites in South Tyrol and in Graubünden in Switzerland are considered an art-historic treasure of European value. Only few other illustrations in frescoes have been preserved this well. Unfortunately some are only very small elements, and the treasures are therefore not valued in the way they should be. The "Stairway to Heaven - Romanesque Road" project aims to put these treasures of medieval times at the centre of attention, to have them described and illustrated from a scientific point of view, and to make them accessible for anyone. In this way people of all age groups get an insight into the "dark world of the Middle Ages" and can enjoy an amazing time journey.

12 extraordinary Romanesque sites from the Trentino-South Tyrol region and other 12 sites from the Swiss canton Graubünden make up the Alpine Romanesque Road. At the geographic centre of this route you'll find the world cultural heritage St. Johann in Müstair Convent. The South Tyrolean route of the Romanesque Road leads from Val di Non/Nonsberg, along the Wine Road, through Burgraviato/Burggrafenamt, and Val Venosta/Vinschgau. The Swiss part of the road is concentrated in Engadin and leads up to the entry to St. Moritz.

Val Venosta/Vinschgau with its Roman sites of European value await discovery by you. Get enchanted by the spirituality of the Monte Maria/Marienberg Benedictine Convent. During your medieval journey you will visit the small city of Glorenza/Glurns, the church of St. Johann in Tubre in Val Monastero/Taufers im Münstertal and in Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stilfserjoch. Just like other smaller, yet highly valuable sites in Lasa/Laas and in Laces/Latsch the following sites are part of the project: S. Benedict in Malles/Mals is one of the oldest churches in Tyrol, Torre Fröhlich/Fröhlichsturm, S. Nicolo/S. Nikolaus in Burgusio/Burgeis and S. Vito/St. Veit at Tartscher Bühel.
